Dublin Dowlings

Sources

As well as the many printed documents and photographs passed on to me by my father, and my own researches in the National Library and National Archives, the core of this site is based on the following sources:

  • Mary Anne's notebook
The notebook written by Mary Anne Dowling, probably in 1872, and featured on the Home Page of this site.

  • Grandad's letter
A letter written by my Grandfather, William Henry Dowling, to his son Osmond (my Dad) in 1953.

  • Family Tree and notes
The earliest copy of the family tree I have is one drawn by my father, along with a copybook of notes, probably around the time of the letter above.

  • Kathleen's album
A few years ago I gave Kathleen an empty album and asked her, as self-appointed family historian, to fill it with photos and document the people and places in each. Now 94, she is still my main recourse for filling in the missing bits.

  • Wheels Within Wheels by Dervla Murphy
I've just been reading Dervla's autobiography, written in 1979 and published by Penguin. It gave me much missing information on her side of the family, as well as a wonderful reading experience. I'm sorry I've never met her.

Needless to say, these sources do not always agree! I'll try to document the clashes as they occur.
