Dublin Dowlings

Notes written by Mary Anne Dowling, page 1

Mary Anne's notes, page 1
  [  Pages 2 & 3  ]

This small (approx 55mm x 90mm) 8-leaf notebook was given to my grandfather Willie Dowling by his father Robert. It was written by Mary Anne, Robert's sister and my great-grandaunt. Given the date of the last entry, it seems likely that it was written sometime between Robert and Maggie's emigration to America in April 1872 and the birth of their first child there (or news of such arriving in Dublin) in February 1873. At that point all three of Mary Anne's surviving brothers were in the USA and she may have felt the need to record what she knew of the family history, perhaps for their benefit and that of their children, and perhaps at Robert's urging. Robert and Maggie returned to Dublin in 1877 or 1878.

Only six of the sixteen pages are written on. The text on this page reads

"Elenor Kavanagh married to Laurence Dowling. In St Andrews Parish Chapel on 2nd October 1792
James Dowling born September 21st 1793 -
William Dowling born May - 1795
Anne Dowling born July 9th - 1796"
