Catholic Cemetry at Prospect
The mortal remains of Anne Dowling of Portobello were interred in the Catholic Cemetry at Prospect, on the 17 of Oct 1837. Lot Mb. Fig 13½ D.S.
This is the oldest burial cert I have and Anne was almost certainly the first occupant of 13½ D.S. The cemetry had been opened in 1832. Today of course it is better known as Glasnevin Cemetry and is a popular destination for tourists. Among the patriots, poets, politicians and artists buried there are Charles Stewart Parnell, Daniel O'Connell, William Dargan, Gerard Manly Hopkins, James Stephens, the Pearse Family, Seán McBride, Brendan Behan, James Joyce's father and Luke Kelly of The Dubliners.
